Pete Smyser

Pete Smyser

Pete Smyser is a virtuoso guitarist residing in Harleysville, PA with his wife Deanne. Jazz critics have likened Smyser to such legendary guitarists as Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass and Jim Hall. Smyser is an endorser for American Archtop Guitars, is listed among greats in the book - The Jazz Guitar, Its Evolution, Its Players and Personalities Since 1900 (Ashley Mark Publishing Co.), and was on the Artist Roster of the Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour (PennPAT) from 1997-2004. He is scheduled to be inducted into the Hall of Fame this year at Philadelphia’s premier jazz club – Chris’ Jazz Café.

Smyser has released the following 7 recordings as a leader; “The Jerome Kern Concert …LIVE!” (which peaked at #37 of the jazz radio charts nationally and stayed on the top 50 for several weeks in 2012), “Solo Guitar - Jazz on the Classic”, “Opportunity Knocks”, “Pete Smyser and Larry McKenna”, “The Scene is Clean”, “Out of Nowhere" & “Hangin’ by the Chimney” (a Christmas CD featuring the guitar and sax duo of Smyser and Ted Lis). These CDs are available for purchase and/or MP3 download through websites such as CDBaby.com, Amazon.com, and iTunes.

Smyser is currently planning the release of his eighth CD which was recorded in January of this year. It is a live concert recording of his all-star Philadelphia quintet performing the songs of composer Harry Warren (songs such as “Jeepers Creepers”,“Lullaby of Broadway”, “Serenade in Blue”, “An Affair to Remember”, “You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby”, etc.) Smyser’s most recent performances and recordings have displayed a particular affinity towards historically significant popular American songs from the 1920s through the 1950s. His entertainingly informative concerts that center on iconic composers such as Jerome Kern, George Gershwin and Harry Warren have been highly praised and very well received by audiences at colleges, museums, jazz clubs and churches.

Although his primary style is in the jazz idiom, performing with his custom made 7-string archtop guitar, Pete is comfortable performing many musical genres including classical, jazz, blues, contemporary, folk and more. Smyser’s training included both classical and jazz music.

Smyser has 27 years of professional teaching experience and has been part of the jazz faculty at Moravian College (Bethlehem, PA) since 2006. He also offers private guitar instruction from his home studio in Harleysville, PA.
